Frequently Asked Questions
-
How do I get to campus / the dorms? The camp will be located at the Cohen-Bissell dorms. Click here to navigate to this address using Google Maps.
-
What do I need to bring?Students should bring a variety of clothing, including pants and a jacket – summer temperatures can vary widely. Students should bring a towel and appropriate toiletries. Students will need twin extra long sheets, a blanket, and a pillow for their rooms. They should also expect to use a notebook, pens, and paper. These supplies will be available for purchase if students do not wish to bring them. Fans and refrigerators will be available for rental. Students should bring a laptop capable of running the full version of Microsoft Word and a flash drive (for more information on our computer recommendations, read the "Requirements" section on this page). Students may also wish to bring a power strip.

What if I forget something? Is there a pharmacy nearby?A short 4 block walk from the dorms, the local Hanover CVS carries the needs of most students. For the most common office supply needs, the DDI has a small store in the student dorm to provide pens, paper, notebooks, jump drives, ethernet cords, and more at prices cheaper than found in Hanover. The Dartmouth bookstore also carries most office supplies or other student needs.

Can I request a specific lab?No, sorry. Unlike other institutes, the DDI does not have tiered labs. All labs are competitive and one or more teams from each lab reaches elimination rounds at the camp tournament. In assigning labs, we take into account seniority, previous attendance at the DDI, and our goal of creating diverse, balanced labs. You can ask your coach to send us notes about what they want you to work on, and we will forward them to your lab leader once labs have been assigned.
-
What is your mailing address? Can I send mail to my student?Yes. Enrollment forms and mail for the camp should be sent to: Dartmouth Forensic Union Hinman Box 6145 Hanover, NH 03755 For mail that will be distributed to students at the debate workshops, please address it to: Student name c/o Debate Institutes at Dartmouth, Hinman Box 6145 Hanover, New Hampshire 03755. With express mail, be sure to waive the signature requirement. This is the Director’s campus mailbox. Mail will be distributed to students in the residence hall.
-
How does the meal plan work? What if my student runs out of money on their meal card?Meal cards contain an appropriate combination of swipes (access to the all you can eat cafeteria) and declining balance. The declining balance can be used to purchase additional breakfast, lunch, or dinner swipes or to purchase la carte items from any of several campus food outlets, including snacks during the day or later at night. We find that students appreciate this meal plan flexibility. If a student uses up the declining balance, he or she can make cash or credit card purchases or parents can contact us to purchase additional declining balance.
-
Can Dartmouth Dining Halls satisfy my x diet / y food allergy?Yes. Like all Ivy League universities, Dartmouth has extensively expanded its dietary accommodations in the last ten years. Whatever your diet is (halal, kosher, gluten-free, vegan, etc.), there will be food to eat. Not only that, the food is good!
-
Can I request a roommate?Yes. There is a space for roommate requests on the enrollment form. We will do our best to honor your request, although we make no guarantees.
-
Do students have access to an athletic facility?Students do not have access to the campus gym. Students are welcome to exercise outside during free time and many students choose to run around a nearby pond. There is a basketball hoop and volleyball court next to the dorms and we have some sports equipment that students can borrow.
-
How do you ensure safety in the dorms? Each night, we check in every student via room check. After room check, students are not allowed outside the dorms. They are not allowed in opposite gender rooms, but can socialize in common lounge areas. Lights out is also enforced each night. The dorms are patrolled by our residence hall staff and at least one staff member is located on each floor.
